University of Fort Hare killings: ‘Higher education institutions becoming a cradle for criminality’ – News24 (for subscribers)

Following an attempt on the life of the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Sakhele Buhlungu, former deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Dr. Oscar van Heerden, claims that higher education institutions are becoming breeding grounds for crime, News24 reports. 

During the gunfire outside of Buhlungu’s home in Alice, Eastern Cape, on Friday night, his bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, was killed while he was transported to safety. “Speaking to IOL, Buhlungu alleged that a syndicate with links to business people and political operators was at the centre of dodgy deals at the university.” 

Ramaphosa authorised the Special Investigating Unit to investigate charges of corruption and maladministration at the institution, with a particular focus on four contracts and the awarding of Honours degrees. Read more here

Chippa United is making a bold plan to beat DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld stadium. The Gqeberha team has had a slow start to the second half of the season. In their first game after the break, they tied 1-1 with Stellenbosch.
