MTN wants to exit Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover

Mobile operator giant MTN is watching the unfolding situation in Afghanistan very closely and continue to consider exiting the country now that the Taliban have retaken control of the country according to a Fin24 report

MTN has been the largest mobile operator in Afghanistan since launching there in 2006 but wants to imminently exit the war-torn country as well as Yemen. MTN say they will “evaluate options to exit Afghanistan”. 

When Syria descended into civil war and unrest, MTN simply abandoned its operations in the country, which amounted to a loss of R4.7 billion. 

According to MTN’s interim financial records, its operations in Afghanistan amounts to a total of 1.2% of the group’s total revenue.
