“Resistance” is the only way forward, Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MK) spokesperson Carl Niehaus told Business Day after former president Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail in a momentous judgment by the Constitutional Court.
Although Zuma’s exact whereabouts are sketchy – some of his family say he’s in Nkandla and others hint he’s still in Zambia following the funeral of Kenneth Kaunda – Niehaus told the newspaper supporters were en route to Nkandla in rural KwaZulu-Natal to form a human chain around the former president.
Meanwhile, the ANC called for calm from its members and said it “will reflect on implications and consequences” at a meeting this weekend after studying the judgment.
The court ordered Zuma to present himself to law enforcement authorities within five days from Tuesday to begin his jail term. Failing to do so, police minister Bheki Cele and national police commissioner Khehla Sithole must make arrangements for Zuma to be arrested.
As Justice Malala tweeted: “No one forced #Zuma to take his disrespectful, antagonistic, recalcitrant, contemptuous stance towards the Zondo Commission. He chose to defy the law and keep his secrets. He made his bed. He must lie on it.”
But five days is a long time. And until then South Africa will be on tenterhooks, waiting for whatever resistance is to come.
